Blogmas Day Four // Christmas Film Fridays #1

Let's talk about Christmas films!

I love all things Christmas, and snuggling up with a festive film is probably up there with wrapping presents and decorating the tree as one of my favourite things to do. This first edition of me rambling about such films will be mainly concerned with Christmas films of my childhood.

The Christmas films I remember most strongly from when I was growing up are the Tim Allen The Santa Clause movies. I know they're cheesy, and now when I re-watch them they're possibly slightly offensive... But still, I think think they put the films-about-Santa's-identity "genre" into a more modern and relatable light. Even though the first one is over twenty years old - older than me! I do feel like this is one for the kids, as some of the jokes will go over their heads and they'll just laugh their little heads off at the slapstick comedy, but those jokes are the ones that will amuse the parents. So. Fifty/fifty on that one.

A classic that I loved to watch every year as a child was Miracle on 34th Street with Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle and Mara Wilson (from Matilda) as the young girl Susan who's a very skeptical six-year-old when it comes to Christmas. Another Santa's-identity movie, but a little more moving and heart-warming with bittersweet moments. This is definitely a family one to sit down altogether and watch with a box of Quality Street, though very small children might get a little bored.
(This, I've just realised, was released the same year as The Santa Clause, total coincidence.)

That's it for today! What are your favourite childhood Christmas films?
