It's the first Monday in December, so that must mean there's a bunch of new DVDs out today which we're supposed to put on our Christmas lists or buy for other people... I'll never say no to new movies! I'm going to talk about three films being released today, all of which I saw in the cinema but didn't review at the time.
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
I quite like these films. The American cousin of James Bond, they're full of action and humour, as well as loveable goodies and love-to-hate-'em baddies. I like the development of Simon Pegg's character Benji in this film and the bromance between him an Ethan Hunt. Rebecca Ferguson is also BRILLIANT in this; if you've seen the film, you'll appreciate it when I say her method of exit from the opera was truly spectacular!
My dad has asked for this for Christmas, so it would make a good pressie for dads, older brothers, boyfriends... But also the ladies who enjoy a bit of Tom Cruise, or just a good adventure!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
I didn't know this used a be a TV series in the 1960s until the credits rolled on this latest offering from Guy Ritchie, and after seeing the film I kinda wanna watch it! The film is also set in the Sixties and the sets, costumes and general aesthetic are simply divine. I also love the mix of characters: Henry Cavill's smoother-than-silk Napoleon Solo, Armie Hammer's strong-and-silent Illya Kuryakin and Alicia Vikander's gorgeously independent Gaby. Yes, the film fulfils some cliches, but it's not looking to be a beacon of social justice. It sets out to give the audience a couple of hours of escapist fun, and I think it achieves that.
I might be getting this for my mum for Christmas, possibly along with a box set of the original series. Those feeling nostalgic for the old show might enjoy this, but it would also make a good gift for someone who likes their cookie-cutter action/spy films a little out-of-the-mould.

One review called this film 'a classic rom-com with a modern state of mind' and once again, those people who actually make a living reviewing films (unlike me, who uses blogging to avoid the realities of student life) have got it right. Another real-life, distinctly UN-sugarcoated rom-com from Judd Apatow, this film is freakin' hilarious. It has its bittersweet moments that might make you sit back and look at your own life, or the lives of your friends, but in a reassuringly affirming way. Amy Schumer is a brilliant comedian, writer and actress, not to be underestimated.
This would be a fab gift for your BFF, maybe along with the promise of a girls' night to enjoy some popcorn and a glass of rosé. I cried with laughter watching this with my mum, so cousins and sisters might like this as well.
Hope this helps with any present-hunting you might be doing at the moment! What Other gifts will you be giving this year?
Later during Blogmas I'll be doing other types of gift guides, so you might like to subscribe to the blog or add it to your Favourites to keep updated!
